Microsoft Claims 96 Percent Netbooks Running on Windows


Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc said recent data from NPD shows that Windows share of the US netbook market has grown from less than 10 percent in first quarter of 2008 to 96 percent in February 2009. Brandon claims that this sudden growth in netbook market is driven by consumers’ desire for a netbook computing environment that mirrors their full size PC. Read More

Fusion-io Claims Extremely High Data Transfer Speed in Solid State Drives


Fusion-io says that it has achieved extremely high data transfer speeds in solid-state drives on HP servers. Fusion-io and HP built a system using five 320GB ioDrive Duos and six 160GB ioDrives in a single HP ProLiant DL785 G5 server, running with four quad-core Opteron processor. Apple’s Browser and OS Market Share Continues to Increase in March


After seeing slight drop in February, Apple’s web browser and OS market share continued to increase in March 2009. According to latest statistics from Net Applications, Apple’s Mac OS X market share reached 9.77 percent, whereas iPhone OS reached 0.49 percent and iPod touch OS reached 0.11 percent. Windows market share continued to fall and it dropped from 88.41 percent in February to 88.14 percent in March. Read More

Next Gen iPhone to Feature 802.11n and FM Transmitter?


AppleInsider has revealed that iPhone 3.0 beta firmware contains information about wireless radio that next gen iPhone will use. The firmware shows that Apple will be using Broadcom BCM4329 wireless chipset in place of BCM4325 that brought WiFi and Bluetooth support in present generation iPhone. The new wireless chipset adds 802.11n support along with FM receiver and transmitter to previous generation chipset. Read More

Microsoft Releases Second Laptop Hunter Ad


Microsoft has released another ad in their Laptop Hunters series. This time it is a recent college grad Giampaolo, who claims that he is technically savvy and wants a computer that he can customize. He is looking for a laptop that is portable, has great battery life and is powerful for under $1,500. Like the previous Laptop Hunters ad featuring a girl named Lauren, Giampaolo also first looks for a Mac. He looks at a MacBook calls it “So Sexy” and then adds “Macs are more about aesthetics than computing power.” After looking at few other laptops he finally decides to buy HP HDX 16t that weighs 7.06 pounds, has around 2 hour battery life and comes with 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo T6400 processor. Is this a portable system with great battery life and powerful processor? Actually, a $999 MacBook has better processor and is lighter with way better battery life. And as an added bonus it looks way sexier than the HP laptop.

AT&T Updating 3G Network in Anticipation of Next Gen iPhone


AT&T is rushing to rollout updated 3G network as the company expects tenfold increase in traffic from new iPhone hardware that Apple is expected to release in June 2009. Apple Orders 3.2- and 5-megapixel CMOS Camera Sensors for Upcoming Devices


DigiTimes is reporting that OmniVision has received orders for 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor from Apple for next generation iPhone. The company has also received orders for 5-megapixel sensor for another unknown Apple product that will be launched later this year. According to DigiTimes, STMicroelectronics and Aptina were the other two contenders for Apple’s camera orders but they lost the deal to OmniVision. Read More

NVIDIA Demos All-in-One Tegra Chipset at CTIA


NVIDIA demoed their new all-in-one Tegra chipset that integrates CPU, GPU, Northbridge, Southbridge, memory and input/output connections on a single chip. According to NVIDIA, this ARM based component will be capable of 1080p video output on a mobile phone and powerful enough to run netbooks. However, the biggest achievement of the Tegra chipset will be that it will do all this while sipping just half watt of power. Walt Mossberg: BlackBerry App World Buying Process Harder than iPhone


Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg has posted first impressions of the new BlackBerry App Store that was launched today morning. According to Mossberg, RIM’s store is clumsier to use than Apple’s, but it works. The selection at launch is decent, but with some surprising omissions. Intel Details Larrabee Graphics Chip at GDC


Intel’s Tom Forsyth, a software and hardware architect working on the upcoming Larrabee Graphics Chip, discussed the design details and inner working of Larrabee at GDC. Safari to get Performance Boost in iPhone OS 3.0


Ars Technica has posted results of JavaScript performance test done on Safari web browser in iPhone OS 3.0 beta, which was released to developers for testing earlier this month. MIT says 1,000GHz Chip Possible with Graphene


MIT researchers claim that a new material called graphene that was discovered in 2004 could be used to develop computer chips with clock speed as high as 1,000GHz. Graphene is a type of pure carbon that’s only one-atom thick and has been already used by engineers to make prototype transistors and other simple devices. MIT researchers have taken one step further in their latest effort and developed a prototype frequency multiplier that can take the clock speed of a computer chip and produce an output signal that is a multiple of that frequency. Apple Files Car Navigation System Related Patent Application


Apple has submitted an 11-page patent application detailing a safe touchscreen navigation system. Apple says that use of present navigation systems can force drivers to take their eyes off the road, resulting in a potentially hazardous condition. China Unicom Reveals Information About Next Gen iPhone


China Unicom today confirmed that it would start selling Apple’s iPhone in China on May 17th. China Unicom is the second largest cellphone carrier in China with about 150 million subscribers. The company will also be rolling out its new 3G network on the same day in 55 Chinese cities to support iPhone 3G. Canon today announced the new Digital Rebel T1i (aka EOS 500D) compact DSLR camera.   • Scott says that there are many other features in iPhone OS 3.0 like Note Sync, suto-fill, youtube accounts, stereo Bluetooth, WiFi auto login and anti-phising.
  • You can access search by flicking left from your standard home screen. The Spotlight searches through all the application on the iPhone and can it works as quick launcher for applications.
  • Next is system wide search - Apple has created a new home screen for this and it is called Spotlight.
  • A new application Voice Memos has been added that records voice memos. Apple is adding support for CalDAV and subscriptions to Calendar application.
  • Apple is also adding MMS to next version of iPhone OS and it works just like the SMS application.
  • iPhone 3.0 will have landscape view for applications like Mail, Notes and SMS.
  • Scott says that he wants to show one more thing and that's photos. now you can select multiple pics to send via email in iPhone OS 3.0.

  • Double tap on text (a magnifying glass appears) to select it then slide your finger and pull across what you want to grab. Now you can paste the selected text anywhere. he is showing copy and paste across apps.
  • He says Apple has been working hard to develop a easy to use interface for the function on touchscreen. he demoing it now.
  • Scott is back on stage and says "3.0 brings a lot of new features for devs, and also for customer" The first new feature is cut, copy and paste.

  • The app is similar to Ocarina, you blow in the mic, then slide the trombone on the right and change the range on left.
  • The new app from the company is Leaf Trombone World Stage, it is a multiplayer music application.
  • Now on stage it's Dr Ge Wang from Smule - the company that created Ocarina for iPhone.
  • The second game LiveFire is multiplayer first person shooter and the game play is really good. Graphics are good and smooth.
  • As you would have guessed Touch Pets is about pets, they are showing in-game purchases. a message appears on screen asking " Would you like to purchase Shirt Pack for $0.99?" with Buy and Cancel options.
  • Now ngmoco - a startup company is showing their new games for the iPhone - Touch Pets and LiveFire. Both are multiplayer games.
  • The Johnson & Johnson app for the iPhone uses that data for dieting and keeping track of glucose levels.
  • Anita Mathew from Johnson & Johnson is on stage showing off diabetes testing kit. She says that with the new SDK data from the kit can be transmitted to iPhone over Bluetooth or via dock connector.
  • ESPN is showing streaming video and it looks very good, the iPhone 3.0 has a new media player that automatically adjusts quality for the bandwidth available.

  • Meebo CEO Seth Sternberg is on stage and he is talking about Meebo apps in OS 3.0.
  • Scott says "this is a big update for iPhone SDK. Now, a couple of weeks ago we called a few devs to see what they could do in two weeks.
  • The new SDK will also feature new APIs for streaming video and audio as well as API for in-game voice.
  • Now he is explaining the Push architecture. So there will be no background application in iPhone 3.0
  • Scott explains why Apple is not allowing background applications. he says that Apple has been testing background applications, but battery life of the device drops by as much as 80 percent when multiple applications are running in the background.
  • Scott says that Apple was late because they had to re-architect the server structure to support Push.
  • Scott now talk about 'Push' " You know, we're late on this one".
  • Apple will now support use of core location for turn by turn navigation. Application based on this feature will be coming soon.
  • Apple shows FM transmitter with its own custom app and medical device that shows off blood pressure reading on the iPhone.
  • iPhone SDK 3.0 will also include support for accessories. For example, developers will be able to build custom apps that talk directly to their hardware.
  • Apple is adding peer to peer connectivity, which will be great for multi-player games. A new API allows iPhone and iPod touch to form an IP connection with other devices with same application to play games or share information via Bluetooth.
  • App Store will now support subscription model for e-books, games. For example you purchase a game with 10 levels, then after completing the first 10 levels you can update the game by buying next 10 levels directly from the game.
  • He says more than 800 million apps have been downloaded from App Store and there will be some major enhancements to the App Store in the new SDK.
  • Scott says that Apple worked hard for past one year to make iPhone SDK even better, 1000 new APIs have been added to the upcoming SDK.

Apple’s iPhone Market Grew 245 Percent in 2008


Gartner has released smartphone market share statistics for 2008 and iPhone saw the largest rise in market share. Though Nokia still rules the smartphone market, its market share went down from 49.4 percent in 2007 to 43.7 percent in 2008. RIM was in the second place with sales of 23 million BlackBerry devices, their market share for 2008 was 16.6 percent up from 9.6 percent in 2007. Microsoft Says IE8 Faster than Firefox and Chrome on Average


Microsoft has been taking lot of heat as IE8 has been shown to be way slower than other competing browsers in various tests done by tech journalists. Microsoft has posted a video showcasing that IE8 is faster than Firefox and Google Chrome on average when loading top 25 most visited websites. Palm Investor Says iPhones Customers will Switch to Pre


In an interview with Bloomberg, Palm investor Roger McNamee said Palm Pre would lure iPhone customers when their contracts start expiring in June.
“You Know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone,” McNamee told Bloomberg. “Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.”
